Closing a dry bag
When you're on board, protecting your electronic devices from water, UV rays and dust is a priority. There are different types of closures, which vary according to the model and size of the bag.
The most common type of closure is the rolled closure. It is usually used on tube bags. A bag with a roll top closure is often more compact than other models on the market, but has a limited clip seal.
Zipper-type closures, which are mainly found on sports duffel bags, are momentarily resistant to immersion depending on their IP rating.
Another type of welded closure, which is highly waterproof and dustproof, is reserved for professional equipment due to its high price.
The size of a dry bag
The size of a dry duffel bag varies according to its capacity. The capacity of the bag is expressed in litres. This is why it is not always clear how much capacity you need to carry when choosing your bag. In principle, for a nautical activity such as paddling, sailing or kayaking, a capacity of 5, 12 or 25L is preferred. As an indication, here are the capacities of the different bag sizes:
- 5L dry bag: it can hold sun cream, a small cereal bar and a water bottle
- 12L dry bag: easily holds a change of clothes with a small towel and small accessories
- 25L dry bag: for bulky clothes, shoes with a large towel and various accessories.
- 40L dry bag: from this volume onwards, you have room to fit your equipment, even if it is bulky. From 60 to 90 Litres or more, these bags are big enough to carry the load needed for several days.
In order to keep your smartphone available during your sessions, it is advisable to also opt for a waterproof pouch. This will allow you to take pictures during your outings at any time without having to rummage around in your bag looking for your smartphone, at the risk of dropping your equipment in the water.
Degree of protection
The level of waterproofness of a bag is characterised by its IP rating. A dry paddle or kayak bag is designed to withstand splashes but not full immersion. Here is an order of magnitude of protection ratings:

It is important to know that no bag with a roll top closure will be completely waterproof in the event of a fall into water, regardless of the manufacturer. You should therefore look for a bag with a zip that is guaranteed to be resistant to immersion, whether occasional or prolonged.
