Marine Grease and Lubricant

Every mechanism needs to be protected by a lubricant or marine grease. This is the first requirement for perfect operation.

A distinction is made between marine greases and lubricants, which are sometimes also called de-greasing agents. Depending on the type of mechanism and the problem to be treated, one is used rather than the other.

The choice of the right grease or lubricant determines the life of your boat's parts, whether they are screws, bearings or engines. The greasier the product, the less friction and therefore wear, but depending on the materials to be greased, grease or lubricants are recommended.

What is marine grease used for?

Made for wet environments, marine waterproof grease adheres well and is insoluble in water. Its purpose is to protect boat mechanisms from salt corrosion in a marine environment. It is used to grease and protect mechanical elements from wear and rust. It is very stable and long-lasting, whatever the temperature. Marine grease is available in spray, tube or jar. 

The Marine Greases

• White marine grease or green multipurpose grease is suitable for the marine environment to prevent corrosion of all materials: nuts, bolts, propellers, battery terminals, hardware, etc... 

• Teflon lubricates all materials (wood, plastic, rubber or leather) with a thin, non-oily film and is used for slides, mainsail sliders, tiller cars, etc. and prevents friction and premature wear. It is a recommended marine bearing grease.

• Lithium grease is a high performance grease developed for professionals for lubrication in difficult conditions. Very penetrating, it adheres perfectly to the metal, resists shocks, loads and speed, even in the presence of dust, mud, heat... The marine grease in aerosol can is easy to dose.

The lubricants

Their purpose is to preserve surfaces from ageing or freezing, or to facilitate the dismantling of seized parts and also to protect plastics, seals and rubbers.

• A silicone lubricant is moisture and rust resistant and can be used on both metal and plastic. It is pleasantly non-greasy and does not attract dust or debris.

• The famous WD 40, which stands for "Water Displacement", has a secret formula with a distinctive smell. During the 1960 Florida hurricane, WD40 saved farm equipment, vehicles, electrical systems and industrial machinery from moisture, so much so that WD 40 became a generic term for a degreaser that cleans, lubricates and protects.
