Skimboarding is a sport that is becoming more and more popular mixing surfing and skateboarding.
The principle is simple, jumping off the beach to reach and surf the waves from the shore to perform manoeuvres or simply glide along the shore on a thin layer of water.
Skimboarding, between skateboarding and surfing
All too often compared to a vulgar beach game, skimboarding is a real discipline in its own right.
Fun and accessible to all, skimboard is developing more and more on the beaches, and the discipline is evolving thanks to riders who are popularizing this sport.
Skimboarding is making a strong comeback, you'll find at Nootica the skimboard you need to have fun.
Skimboarding, an evolving discipline
There are two types of practices in the skimboard world:
- "Flat" skimboarding:
- As its name suggests, this discipline is practiced on a flat surface.
The flat consists in making figs borrowed from skateboarding or simply for beginners sliding along a beach.
For the flat, you have to throw the board in front of you while running, then jump on it to acquire enough speed to glide as long as possible and to link tricks.
- "Wave" skimboarding:
- This discipline is closer to surfing than skateboarding and is intended for confirmed riders.
Practicing the skimboard in wave consists in embracing each other from the beach to go surfing the waves that roll along the shore (shore break).
The rider starts from the beach running towards the wave and jumps on the board to go surfing the shore break and perform tricks close to surfing.

How to choose a skimboard
It is important to note that depending on the discipline, you need an adapted board.
- Flat skimboard:
- For the flat, a simple wooden board will do the trick. However, it is important to wax the board well in order to keep a good grip and to prevent it from slipping under your feet.
To guide your choice, know that a skimboard, standing upright, must reach you minimum at the navel, maximum at the plexus.
- Wave skimboard:
- This discipline requiring more technique, it will be necessary a board adapted like a fibre skimboard.
For wave riding, you should opt for a thicker board with more buoyancy.
Usually wave boards are made of epoxy foam covered with a layer of fiberglass.
Wave skimboards have a pad that provides good grip.
