All about wakeskating

Wakeskate is a water sport that combines the techniques of wakeboarding and skateboarding on water. The format of the wooden, composite or fibreglass boards is similar to wakeboards

Fitted with tethers, the wakeskate gives riders an exhilarating feeling of freedom. You can achieve wakeskate patterns that are close to the ones served up to skateboarding. But how to practice wakeskate ? Follow our tips on how to choose your equipment or approach a wakeskate kicker.

How to wakeskate ?

As with wakeboarding, the wakeskater is towed by a boat. He can also practise his sport in a wake park. It is then pulled by a wakeskiing with two pulleys or full size 5 or 6 pulleys.

His feet, however, are not attached to the board. To compensate for the lack of footwear, the boards have adhesive or foam strips to help the rider keep their feet on the board. Some have grips similar to those on skateboards.

The wakeskate is for experienced riders. Indeed, the absence of bindings makes the practice of this sport more difficult: the wakeskater must know how to maintain his balance and preserve his support despite the traction of the boat or the water ski.

How to stick in wakeskate

In the water, put your heels down between the nose and tail. When the boat picks up speed, the board will stick to your feet. Stand up at this point for a real sticking. After you get out of the water, slide your back foot out and stick it along the tail. Keep the front foot just off the nose break. The orientation of the foot depends on how you feel and the trick you want to perform. This is a good position to ride in wakeskate. It is valid for all tricks.

Running a wakeskate turn

To render a wakeskate turn, stay well balanced on the board. If you lean too far forward, the board will slip and go far forward. All you have to do is swim for it. When you turn, keep your legs loose. Press down on your heels without letting yourself fall backwards or forwards.

Kickers : how to approach them in wakeskate

Place your back foot along the tail. The front foot is held at the entrance of the nose. To take the cut on the kicker, proceed as you would on a wakeboard. Stay loose and take the support on your heels. Then get back on the flat for a while before you hit the kicker. As you land on the module, flex your legs to better absorb it. Fly up and then flap your legs again to become one with the kicker.

How to choose your wakeskate ?

You are looking for a wakeskate to practice in your favourite wake park. Here are the questions to ask yourself in order to choose the right one.

How to define the size of the board ?

The size of the wakeskate board depends mainly on your weight. In any case, it is better to ride a bigger board than a smaller one.

  • Between 40 and 72 kg, use a board between 99 and 104 cm.

  • Between 72 and 90 kg, use a board between 106 and 109 cm.

  • For a weight of more than 90 kg, it is recommended to use a board between 111 and 117 cm.

What material to choose for your wakeskate board?

You'll find wakeskates in wood or composite. Wooden boards are heavier than other types of boards. They sink into the water easily and make it easier to perform certain tricks. However, they do not last as long as composite boards. Composite boards give the wakeskater a better feeling. They are also more expensive.

The wakeskate has no fasteners. It can be covered with an EVA pad to improve foot grip. This is the ideal option for beginners. There is no risk of injury when they fall. The wakeskate board can also be equipped with anti-skid strips. It offers optimal traction for performing tricks. It can, however, cause shin splints when falling.

Shoes: is it necessary for wakeskating?

Wakeskating can be done either barefoot or with shoes. With the use of an EVA pad one can do without shoes. However, with a grip like on skates, you need shoes.

But, it can happen that you break a toe by tapping it against the board. Is your board equipped with anti-slip strips? Use wakeskate shoes. They optimize your grip on the board.

There's nothing left for you to do but try wakeskate, a water sport reserved for experienced riders.
