Exotic fishing: techniques and equipment

Crossing swords with a barracuda or a swordfish is a challenge, as much about the man as the material ! Exotic fishing is a passion. First appearing on African coasts, in South Africa, Ivory Coast, Gabon, then all over the world, such as Madagascar, Mexico, Costa Rica, Maldives, Thailand or New Caledonia, the exotic-fishing makes a lot of sense. Travelling the world's waters to catch a roosterfish in Mexico, a carangue in New Caledonia or a swordfish in the US is more than exhilarating. But to make your fishing trip successfull, it's essential to adapt your technique and tackle.

The best way to get the most out of your fishing trip is to use the right equipment.

The throw and the heavy throw

Heavy casting is done with short, powerful rods of 50 to 80 lbs. Don't skimp on the quality of the reel. Once it's packed with braid, it should be able to easily throw your maxi poppers, stickbaits, and other swimmers over 200 grams over 70 or 80 meters.

For a more relaxing fishing than jigging or casting, you can try your hand at the set fishing. This is also a good plan B if the lure technique doesn't work well.

For set fishing, you can use your rods equipped with strong nylon, 50 or 60/100, on the reel equipped with a braid, with large reinforced hooks. The most suitable leader is a sliding one, made of steel 80-200 lbs or nylon 100-160/100. Please note that the hook is a calm hook as long as it does not bite. During the catching, the fight will be as tonic as when jigging or casting !

The troll fishing

For fishing, you can once again use your casting rods, equipped with medium-sized lures. The beauty of the trolling equipment is that anything is possible. Any predator  passing through the area can be tempted to try it if it suits him, even if this technique favours marlin, sailfish, dolphin or wahoo. To give yourself the best chance, set up several rods with different baits and fish at different depths. Don't compromise on rod quality and power. The fight that follows the catch is a tough test for the equipment. To try this technique, take advantage of a break between two spots to make the most of your fishing session and get some extra experience.

The best way to get the most out of your fishing session is to take a break between two spots.

The most athletic will learn the jigging. It is practiced with the same material as in France, but in a reinforced version. With a jigging rod or a rod, the pleasure is identical. However, remember to bring enough jigs, because between the sharks and the barracudas, the cuts and breaks are numerous.

Fishing with swimbait

Fishing with swimbaits is certainly what symbolises the most exotic fishing. We all remember spectacular scenes, fictional or real, of large predators attacking on the surface, relentless on a popper or a stickbait, and the ensuing fight between the popper and its prey. These images are the origin of the craze for tropical fishing.

Coastal vs. offshore fishing

Depending on the species sought, one adapts one's technique and equipment, but also the fishing spot. In coastal fishing, the water is turbid, and if you move away from the coast, you can reach more crystal clear water. But big game fishing can be done near the coast as well as offshore, depending on the fish you are targeting.

The best way to fish for big game fish is to fish in the open water.

Coastal fishing

With coastal fishing, you navigate between 3 or 4 knots, in the murky waters where barracudas, Roosterfish or dunes and other kingfish are hiding.

Offshore fishing

By offshore fishing, the most commonly used technique is trawling, at an average speed of 7 knots. It is the perfect technique to catch marlin, sailfish or tuna. It is practiced with a powerful rod, strong enough to reel in a fish weighing more than 40 kilos.

Prepare your trip

A fishing trip is carefully planned. You probably won't find a good fishing tackle on the other side of the world, so any oversight is bound to be a problem!

Hardware and Accessories

Depending on your destination, local fishing conditions differ, as do the species and therefore the equipment to be selected. Keep it to a minimum and in sufficient quantity:

  • Multi-stranded rods, 2.40 m long, easier to carry. They must be powerful to handle the rushes;

  • Spare spools of braid ;

  • Steel leaders;

  • Broken rings and welded rings;

  • Pliers;
  • A backpack or harness for more comfort ;

  • Strong fluorocarbons of different diameters;

  • Storage boxes for good organisation.

Popper peche exotique

The basic lure is the popper, as it is the one that made big game fishing popular. But it is noisy and if it attracts some fish, it alerts others. So don’t vary to pass heavier, tougher lures:

  • Stickbaits;

  • Jointed lures ;

  • Castings jigs ;

  • Jigs minnows.

Exotic fish fishing is bound to be practiced in paradise destinations. If you are passionate about fishing and have a passion for it, this is an adventure that you can't help but enjoy. Combining travel and fishing is indeed a double challenge. But to be sure of bringing home the trophy fish of your dreams, make sure you have the right equipment and enough of it. Good preparation beforehand is the key to an unforgettable and successful fishing trip.
